Why are computer monitors more expensive than equivalent size TV screens? It largely has to do with pixel density and latency

It's a question that comes up more and more in South Africa especially as South Africa requires a state TV license to be paid annually if a TV set is owned (even if you have no antenna or don't watch any of the state TV channels). Many users nowdays just stream Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Showmax or other services to a large screen. So many are seeking large screens without any TV tuner installed (yes VCRs with tuners also need a license but most don't use them anymore).

The sad part is that an equivalent size monitor is much more expensive than it's TV counterpart. So yes, unfortunately most monitors are made to much lower latencies (eg. 1ms for gaming) and greater pixel density for gaming. But for watching streaming movies this may be over specification.

What many may be seeking is a TV set without a tuner, but in most cases you're going to then have to have the TV tuner removed (in accordance then with the regulations at a fair cost), or try to find a low spec large monitor (problem is finding a low spec monitor especially in a large size format as most are made to higher and higher specs).
