Facebook's 'monopoly power' hurts user privacy, finds US Congress - Don't break them up, rather force them to open and integrate with the Fediverse

When it comes to protecting users' privacy and fighting the spread of misinformation, Facebook is getting worse. So claims a 449-page congressional report released Tuesday, which pins Facebook's multitude of failings, at least in part, on a troubling lack of competition in the social networking space. Facebook, in other words, is a monopoly — and we're all suffering as a result.

The Fediverse is already designed for freedom of choice where to call 'home' as your network, with the ability to follow, or be followed, from anywhere else. Forcing Facebook to open up will allow users to register at Mastodon for example and follow posts on Facebook without Facebook ads and algorithms. And Facebook users will be able to interact with Diaspora, Mastodon, Friendica, and other network users. This will also give Facebook users the freedom to move elsewhere with less friction.
