Could Mahindra's Atom be the answer to affordable electric mobility in South Africa? It's technically a quadricycle with battery swap out capability

The Atom will be powered by an electric motor that can propel it to a top speed of 70km/h. Potential owners will be able to swap out the Atom’s battery pack, which will allow them to use a fresh battery instead of waiting for the current one to finish its charge. In front, the driver is the only passenger, while a rear bench allows seating for up to three adults. The sparse interior looks to be a step back for the Indian automaker, but the car is equipped with 4G connectivity.

I've always said for electric cars to take off in Afric and South Africa we are going to need really affordable and practical EVs. This certainly looks more like what I was expecting to see. It's not going to appeal to the luxury market at all but could be a really practical urban "run" about. It is perfect for rush hour traffic and short commutes. The top speed may be a bit below par though as 80-85km/h is perfect for the urban motorways which carry a 80km/h speed limit in South Africa.

The CEO's name is Mr Gupta which may raise plenty of concerns in South Africa, but he is correct in saying the SA government needs to now start with incentives for EVs in SA.
