Whilst RCS may provide up to 8000 characters, typing indicator, and group chats, these are only up to 100 group participants and the service needs to be supported by all carriers or you can't communicate. Right now SMS text is open for telcos to read but there is not word yet if RCA will be end-to-end encrypted.
So there is really little incentive at all for users to move off Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, etc to RCS. What we really need is a proper open standards protocol for ALL messengers to be able to support - a bit like e-mail that can be exchanged from any e-mail service to a different one.
