Wow, I remember these sounds from long before IBM PC's had appeared, long before WiFi, and in fact long before graphical browsers. We started out on bulletin board systems (BBS) which were all text and the 300 baud speed rates were a bit faster than Morse code.
I was also in tune with the sounds and how they were doing but had no technical insight into what was actually happening. This article delves a bit deeper into that and ends with a symphony of modem connection sounds
