Tata's Tigor is a Cheap EV at around US$13,800 (R200,000)

The Tigor sedan is amongst Tata’s most popular vehicles and a new version was introduced late last year. Now Tata has revealed a battery powered Tigor, which might become one of the first truly affordable electric vehicles to be marketed.

Tata claims a range of 142 km for the Tigor EV and recharging efficiency depends on what you are plugging it into. A conventional wall socket will take six hours to charge the Tigor to full capacity, whilst a DC 15 kW fast charging unit reduces that to an hour and a half.

It is certainly a great package for inner city driving but the 80km/h top speed is not going to break speed limits on the faster freeways - this top speed seems to be the "standard" amongst cheaper EVs and electric scooters. On the other hand, I'm thinking that slightly reduced speeds could save many lives and we certainly need more entry-level priced EVs.

Tata has a small offering of just 3 cars in South Africa which may sound like a small amount but that boosts EV sales in SA by 3%!
