Tornado: A 100 MPH (160 KPH) Steam Engine built in Modern Times
Mallard's speed record of 126 MPH has never been broken for over 50 years, but what is really unique about Tornado is that she was built from scratch (not old parts) in the mid-2000's by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust in Darlington, England, long after steam had been replaced commercially by diesel and electric trains, and she steamed for the first time in January 2008. Built by volunteers she cost about £3m!
Tornado was the first such locomotive built in the United Kingdom since Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways in 1960 (57 years ago). It is the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotive in existence, the entirety of the original production batch having been scrapped without preservation.
