Internet Photo Frame

DIY Project to build a Raspberry Pi powered Internet Photo Frame Seeing my iGala photo frame is no longer pulling photos from Flickr and Picasa (this is what happens to tech after just a few years - your photo frame, Chumby or Pebble can't call home to work or get updates) I'm really coming around to the idea of rather buying a general purpose device like a Raspberry Pi and go to a bit of trouble to either connect it inside a TV (like this project) or buy a LCD screen for it, and then set it up for whatever it needs. The point is there is a better chance of ongoing support for a Pi over a few years than there is for a dedicated branded device. You could probably also use an old Android tablet too I suppose but you would be limited to a 10" screen. With a Pi you could stick it in any display screen really (or velcro it onto the back of a screen). See this DIY project at http://ift.tt/1vpvpLA. This particular project will not only download new photos found in the online Flickr Group (or other location) but will also delete local copies of the photos that are no longer in that Flickr Group. Because there is a local cronjob running, you determine how often it checks for changed photos, and for the rest of the day it is displaying from the local storage without using any INternet data. I have a Pi 2 with a LCD touchscreen so I'll be trying this out during my upcoming vacation. If it works on that screen I'll maybe scale it up to an old flat screen TV I have on the wall that is no longer in use (only change is plugging the HDMI cable out of the one screen, and into the TV).
