I did not realise that Linux Mint has no KDE desktop (maybe it was an unofficial release). I also started my Linux journey on Ubuntu, and progressed to Linux Mint, before settling on Manjaro Linux with KDE.
But I can say that since I discovered KDE on Ubuntu, I have pretty well much stuck with KDE as a desktop. It gives that feeling of familiarity when switching distros. Linux Mint’s Cinnamon desktop is also a strong contender, especially for those leaving Windows behind.
