While South Africa Stalls on EVs First Ethiopian-Assembled All Electric Hyundai Ionic Rolls Out of Haile Gebrselassie’s Marathon Motor Engineering Plant
Sad to say South Africa's car assemblies are still assembling only ICE vehicles. This particular Hyundai is one I would like to have seen in South Africa.
Really exciting times for Ethiopia. Clean and renewable hydropower dominates Ethiopia’s energy generation mix, contributing around 90% of the installed generation capacity. The electricity tariffs are also very favourable, with residential tariffs at around $0.06/kWh. So this is really great news for Ethiopia and Africa. From an economics perspective it may be cheaper (from a tariff's perspective) to import EVs from Ethiopia than from the EU or elsewhere into South Africa.
Marathon Motor Engineering, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Company and Olympic Champion Haile Gebrselassie, has started assembling the all-electric Hyundai Ionic in Ethiopia.
