Google One will backup iOS or Android devices for 'free' - Can users set their own encryption password is my question?

Backups are a great idea but hopefully these are not going "in the clear" for Google to harvest the info from all Android and iOS users? I found no mention in their blog post either about us being able to protect our data. It just says "you can rest easy knowing that your data is safe in the cloud". As soon as I see "cloud" I ask "what about my own encryption?".

We heard today in Amazon's testimony in the US Anti-Trust hearing that they have policies in place to prevent this type of thing being done, BUT employees have been known to violate the paper policies. Will Google be any different?
