This is a great introductory guide into how to use Python for robot programming. It's an excellent overview to understand what the approach is and what sort of things you can do with it. As with anything (even home automation) you start with one or two simple aspects and you keep building and adding on from there. You don't eat the elephant all in one go. Of course, it's all open source so you get to pick it apart and understand how it works.
