Although this video covers Windows only, the reasons given for why many video conversions don't come out clearly are well explained. On the Linux front, alternative software could be VLC or OBS Studio but may not offer as much conversion control as VirtualDub (or should I say intuitive control as yes there is always ffmpeg).
