World Air Quality Index - See current air quality in Australia and 1,000 other cities around the world

In December 2019, real-time Air Quality information was available for than 12,000 stations in 1,000 major cities from 100 countries, thanks to the huge effort from the world EPAs (Environmental Protection Agencies).

There are currently more than 30,000 known air quality monitoring stations in the world, out of which more than 12,000 are published on the World Air Quality Index project. In order to keep a high level on consistency, only stations with particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) readings are published. The AQI standard for every single published station is based on the US EPA Instant-Cast standard.

The site has links to the specific data source for each station, but also links to mobile apps that can be used, and even a page on how to install your own Gaia A11 or A12 approved sensor stations. The basic stations read particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) as well as one for relative humidity and temperature. Advanced stations can report on gas sensing such as Formaldehyde (CH2O), Total volatile organic compound (TVOC), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), and Ozone (O3).

Here in Cape Town we have fairly good air quality but the sad part is our few sensors are actually placed near air quality trouble spots like our refinery and an informal settlement area. Clearly more air quality monitoring stations are needed.
