WhatsApp car licence renewal warning in South Africa - Always first try use your own municipality's online resource

The Road Traffic Management Corporation is warning South Africans about a new WhatsApp car licence renewal service called ChatBack. ChatBack was launched last year and makes it possible for South Africans to renew their car licence through a few simple steps on WhatsApp.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane has warned that the service has not been sanctioned by the organisation, however. He said their concern is that vehicle owners will give their personal details to a third party – which carries risks.

In my own case I've been renewing online for the last few years directly with City off Cape Town's eServices - I make the payment via EFT and they post the disc to me within a week. The local authority already has all my details (in fact I upload nothing) rather than introducing an additional 3rd party. It is worth first checking with your own local authority.
