Disroot is shutting down their Diaspora pod possibly in favour of Hubzilla - But they're doing it right

Interesting blog post (in German) from Disroot explaining their reasons but also that they will not push any of their users out and just shut down. They will keep their pod going until "the last user put the lights out" - unlike Google and others.

Diaspora (and GNU Social) are two of the longest running alternative social networks I can remember and both still have big followings. But as Disroot says things are moving in all sorts of directions now and more is being offered, and they give these reasons for considering (not final) Hubzilla: "not only the interoperability with other protocols but also functionalities such as groups, profiles, chats, forums, articles and of course the nomadic identity and the Zot protocol in general have let us look more and more in this direction , On the other hand, the ActivityPub-operated networks show the potential of new, fresh and massively busy, federal networks".

Nice thing at least with Diaspora, Hubzilla, Friendica, Mastodon, etc is they all play nicely together using the ActivityPub protocol so you are never in a walled garden away from followers on a different network. For example if you leave Facebook today all your followers stay there and can no longer follow you - not so with these other networks. But now you know why Facebook wants to have a walled garden...
