Long range two-way radios or Walkie Talkies as they are also commonly referred, will be without doubt, the most commonly used form of emergency communication should a SHTF situation cause all the usual methods of communication to become obsolete or useless. It should be noted though that the radios listed here are FRS/GMRS typically used in the USA and many other countries are restricted to only 0.5 W on limited UHF frequencies (often called PMR license free channels using 446 MHz).
That said the considerations are still identical, its just the choice that is more limited. Standard walkie-talkies have another added advantage in that it is not just about the two radios you may own, as you will find many others in your community that also have walkie-talkies which connect to the same channels, meaning you can usually communicate with others too.
Just be very wary of accepting any manufacturers stated ranges on the boxes...
Ham radios are best of all but are the most expensive, you need a proper operator license, and they don't use fixed channels so you need to know where to go.
