Now cloud photo storage service Shoebox is shutting down May 22... Where will your favourite cloud storage service be in 5 or 7 years?

Before there was Google Photos, there was Shoebox (yes I know there was Picasa Webalbums but remember Google bought them and then shut them down). The app offered strikingly similar features, including automatic online backup of your photos and cross-platform access and sharing. Now, the service is shutting down. Users are no longer able to upload photos or videos, and media not exported by May 22 will be lost.

So we get announcements now almost every week or two about some cloud service being shut down. Many had become obscure and die without much notice being taken, but for many they have built up memories, journals, blogs, etc and invested a lot of time creating what they have done. Really if you want your memories to survive you need to print them out (and keep them in a real shoebox) or host it yourself (without forgetting to back them up).

In the digital era we are creating vastly bigger amounts of memories online but my biggest fear is that in 100 or 200 years we'll have to less to show from it than we have on paper from the 1800's today...
