Oracle exec: Open-source vendors locking down licences proves 'they were never really open'... Well Yes and No

Ever since Oracle bought out Sun and OpenOffice floundered (and was forked off to LibreOffice), Java had lawsuits, and the concern about MySQL brought about the birth of MariaDB, no-one really believed Oracle's heart was truly in open source. This article is merely that thought being confirmed.

Open source software is driven by "projects" and "Foundations", not "vendors". It's true many open source vendors have offered a hosted services model for organisations that preferred to pay for a one-stop service. But "cloud" is merely a virtualised virtual hosting... nothing really new over a hosted service. In fact, I have said that there is good reason also NOT to go cloud... cloud is a hyped up hosting that many vendors do want to lock in their users with. I'd rather pay something for open source software (for support or keeping the project alive) and buy generic infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud hosting to host it myself than go with an all-in "cloud service". If I have to look at Oracle's CX Cloud, there is just no way out of it. You may get some form of your data out but you can do zip with it.

Never lose control over being able to take back, and USE, your business data. The cloud services are not "until death do us part" relationships. True open source projects are still going strong. With none of them have I had to suddenly plan some exit that inhibited me from using my data. Contrast that to Google Reader and G+, Flickr's deletion of photos, etc. All cloud services that I was forced to make an inelegant exit from.

No Oracle, two wrongs don't make a right, and true open source is a project/foundation and not something a "vendor" steers between the obstacles. You do it for the passion and the contribution to the communal good which you also derive benefit from.
