Electric Vehicles, Loud Pipes and Accident Rates and Why there may be no Correlation
On the face of it when initial figures for motorcycle accidents in New York were adjusted by ownership figures it looked like there was a correlation until you realised the quietest bikes of all actually had the lowest accident rates.
It's just not so simple but also another factor is that all motor cars are a lot more silent (or quieter). Even though my hybrid is running on batteries no-one stops and stares at my car - they are used to hearing just the silent swish of tyres already. Having some hybrids make a sound means pedestrians (jaywalkers?) with become even more complacent. Can we save people from themselves like Australia posts all their warning signs along walkways and at beaches?

Electric Vehicles & Loud Pipes | CleanTechnica Based on sales trends and environmental necessity, electric vehicles (EVs) are the future. But one concern of increasing EV use is the potential effects on pedestrian safety. Several studies and common sense suggest that a near-silent EV poses a risk to pedestrians who are used to judging traffic by sound. This has led to requirements that EVs generate some form of pedestrian warning noise when operating at low speeds where wind noise is negligib... |
