Two examples of how ham radio operators play a vital role during disasters - Cape Town Nuclear Disaster exercise and US Hurricane Michael

The first example is a report back from one of the radio operators, lister van Tonder ZS1OK, who participated with the Disaster Risk Management of the City of Cape Town with their annual Koeberg Nuclear Disaster Exercise. Ham radio operators demonstrated how they could roll out emergency repeater stations and how they can relay messages to/from the disaster management centre to other operators scattered around Cape Town to maintain communications on the ground in the absence of normal mobile phone and Internet connectivity.

HAMNET, the Emergency Communications division of the South African Radio League (SARL), provides communications for emergencies and can mobilise experienced communicators who with their own radio equipment will back up official channels or take over when all else fails.

The report can be read at http://hamnet.co.za/2017/11/25/city-of-cape-town-drm-koeberg-nuclear-disaster-exercise-23-november-2017/.

Another example which is playing out in real life is Hurricane Michael in the USA which is covered in a TV interview at https://www.mypanhandle.com/weather/hurricane/amateur-radio-operators-provide-hurricane-aid-through-the-airwaves/1518968280.

Without electricity or cell service, some of the hardest hit areas can only be reached by radio. Amateur radio operators are stepping in to use their hobby for humanitarian aid.

It's something Lee Paulet of Crystal River has been doing for more than 30 years and he calls Hurricane Michael "by far" the worst situation he's seen. He's helping Michael's victims via the airwaves in the disaster zones only accessible by air.

"Some of the roads are impassable," stated a radio transmission while News Channel 8 interviewed Paulet on Thursday. "They have no TV, they have no fire, no police, no EMS," Paulet explained. "They're just done." Paulet is part of a network of ham radio operators providing logistical support for emergency crews without means of communicating.

Paulet is also using his skills to connect families without cell service who are separated by the storm. Ham radio operators have established frequencies for conducting health and welfare checks.
