Office 2019 (non-cloud) lumbers to the stage once more as Microsoft promises future releases

What might well be the last non-cloudy version of Microsoft Office has been nudged gently into the light.

The on-premises edition of Office 2019 has shipped and contains all the enhancements that Office 365 ProPlus users have seen over the last three years. Microsoft is at pains to point out that 2019 is a one-time release and won't see any of the goodness Office 365 users are promised in coming years, such as AI or new collaboration toys.

Office 2019 will, of course, receive security fixes. But anything else? Well, can we interest you in the cloud?

It's your choice... you can take the red pill or the blue pill... but if you take the cloud one you'll keep on paying and it won't get cheaper... Think about what you actually want to do with documents, spreadsheets and presentations as there are plenty of other completely free alternatives too. It's time too that we as citizens start demanding of our governments to stop spending our tax dollars on buying proprietary software, which then requires us to buy the same software to read and edit those formats. It's an absolute no-brainer but for some reason, governments seem to be caught up in the unlimited funding trap of just spending without questioning reasonable alternatives....
