The Federation is a global social network composed of nodes that talk to each other without walled gardens

The Federation refers to a global social network composed of nodes that talk to each other. Each of them is an installation of software which supports one of the federated social web protocols.

I really love this idea that you can join the network of your choice (for the features and policy that suits you) but you can follow (and be followed) by friends/family who are using a different social network that complies to the interoperability protocols.

It's really good to see Mastodon (Twitter alternative) has over 1,8 million public users and has overtaken diaspora itself. So you won't find Facebook, Google+, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc in The Federation as they want to lock their users into only their network. But if you use Friendica, for example, you can still follow, like, and reply to Twitter users.

Some of the open services using The Federation are:
- Mastodon
- diaspora
- Pleroma
- Friendica
- PeerTube
- Hubzilla
- Write.as
- PixelFed
- Funkwhale
- GNU social
- Socialhome
- Social Relay
- GangGo
