Homebrew is the most popular package utility on MacOS
Homebrew essentially does what a Linux package manager does = finds apps you want to install, installs them, and keeps them up to date. I was using MacUpdater but it is costing $20 per 6 months so I thought I'd look around again and I saw that Homebrew is the most popular (and free) package manager for MacOS.
It's not perfect as you must manually run the updater to do the check (I suppose some cron job can be set for it as it is command line driven) and many may not like the command line driven interface. But the command line is pretty simple to operate and mostly you are searching, installing, and updating.
I still need to explore it a bit further but I have all the basics going and have installed a number of my most used apps using it.
The main alternatives to Homebrew are: MacPorts at https://www.macports.org/ and Fink at http://www.finkproject.org/.
