10+ Million Fires, 19,000 Deaths And 70,000 Injuries From Internal Combustion Vehicles

That's an average of about 285,714 plus fires per annum... it would be interesting to also see the percentage vs number of vehicles on the roads. But that said a conservative estimate of 500 burn deaths could be attributed to the Ford Pinto’s faulty design alone, with less conservative estimates reaching as high as 900. Yes just like Microsoft's Blue Screen of Death, consumers just seem to accept the incumbent's shortfalls.

So that accounts for consumers, so why would the media not be more objective an keep things in perspective and show proper comparisons? There is a tendency for news outlets to focus on new technologies, especially when those technologies hit bumps in the road. Some of this attention is warranted, as fire departments do need to be aware of new technologies and how to best fight fires in electric vehicles, infrequent as they are. Do different battery chemistries need to be treated differently, do firefighters need different tools, is different protective equipment required, etcetera.

On the other hand, the possibility that the news media intentionally sensationalizes electric vehicles to draw traffic, to stoke up fear of new things in the hearts of the masses or in support of their internal combustion vehicle sponsors is very real. Massive global companies stand to lose trillions of dollars when electric vehicles succeed with oil companies at the top of that list.

Personally, apart from Ford Pinto problems, I'd say humans are the biggest risk of all. I can't wait for humans to be replaced with something more reliable...
