Used Nissan Leaf battery packs now power large energy storage system at Johan Cruijff Arena
Electric vehicle battery packs are becoming increasingly popular for stationary energy storage projects. In the latest, Nissan Leaf battery packs are now powering a new large energy storage system at the Johan Cruijff Arena. The stadium also has a solar installation with 4,200 solar panels that can feed power to the new battery system.
It’s the latest of many examples of automakers using electric vehicle battery packs in stationary energy storage projects:
- Mercedes-Benz recently turned a coal power plant into an energy storage system with electric car batteries.
- BMW is also using vehicle battery packs for energy storage projects. They recently connected over 500 BMW i3 battery packs to the UK National Grid to create its latest large energy storage project to date.
- Renault is also using old Zoe battery packs for a home energy storage product and energy storage systems to power off-the-grid charging stations.
- Hyundai has also announced a partnership with a power company for the re-use of its battery packs.
