Vumatel rolling out in Alexandra township in South Africa will kill DStv market share
As fibre broadband rolls out to South Africa’s townships, people will switch away from satellite TV services to online platforms like Netflix.
This is according to DStv research, which shows that once someone makes the switch to an online subscription video service, they don’t go back to satellite TV.
MultiChoice South Africa CEO Calvo Mawela said there is no doubt that the future of pay TV is online, which is why they are arguing that satellite and Internet-based pay TV services must fall under the same regulations in South Africa.
My note: But it's more than that and shows consumers want something more affordable with pick-and-choose what and when you want to watch something. After that, how do you go back to "broadcasting" where they decide what repeats you will watch when. DSTV (and broadcast TV) is an outdated model. Most South Africans, unless locked into the monopoly sports channels that DSTV owns, can't wait to have rich choice at an affordable price. It worked out cheaper for me to ditch my DSTV subscription, upgrade my Internet and subscribe to Netflix, and I have never looked back at all. The Internet offers even more choices on top of this than just Netflix. Multichoice has milked consumers for decades on its old model, its time to give consumers more choice.
