Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug - But the photos will be moved to Smugmug which could break links posted on social media over many years

The buy-out by Yahoo in the past left Flickr as a website undisturbed but the communique from SmugMug now states: "We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018. If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy."

On the FAQ at https://www.smugmug.com/together/faq SmugMug seems to state the opposite: "Will anything happen to my photos? Will they be moved?
No, you’ll still be able to access your photos as you do currently and they’ll retain the same Flickr or SmugMug URL as always. Over time, we’ll be migrating Flickr onto SmugMug’s technology infrastructure, and your Flickr photos will move as a part of this migration — but the photos themselves will remain on Flickr."

Well, that is pretty confusing! Many like me have around 10,000 photos on Flickr over the last 10+ years with 80 to 120 views per day. Many posts made on social media also link back to Flickr photos or albums. I have albums shared with family only or friends only and I cannot see how this will all transfer cleanly into SmugMug? , Moving this will break untold amounts of links.

But it is probably yet another valuable lesson about any cloud service - nothing lasts forever unless you do it yourself and maintain your own links. Look at Google Reader, Picasa Web Albums, and mnay more.

Looks like I'll be starting to cast around to create my own self-hosted photo albums to which I can link. That way I lnow they'll be around as long as I'm here. I've probably relied on Flickr too long to just be there (13 years now).
