Universal profile - Network 2020

Universal Profile A new industry standard for Advanced Mobile Communications and SMS The Universal Profile (UP) is an industry-agreed common set of features and technical enablers for Advanced Communications. The Universal Profile has been developed to deliver a richer, common user experience globally, and simplify both product development and operator deployment of Advanced Messaging. This will provide the scale needed to develop Messaging as a platform. Release 1 (available now) – This includes core features such as capability discovery which will be interoperable between regions, chat, group chat, file transfer, audio messaging, video share, multi-device, enriched calling, location share and live sketching. Here in South Africa it is interesting to see that MTN (and Vodafone did activate on my Vodacom provider network). Google Messenger update this week on Android now supports this service too, and can be set on Android to replace your default SMS / Text app. But we may have to be wary as it mentions falling back onto SMS so it may also be a way for carriers to continue with SMS and MMS costs, instead of us using WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc where we know it is Wifi or data costs only.
