RetroTech: How to Use a Typewriter Hi-tech in its day - the earlier models required no electricity (hence some of these still being used in countries such as India). Innovations such as carbon paper for making carbon copies (today's term in e-mailing for cc or carbon copy originates from this), ringing bells, and correction fluid (anyone remember Tippex?) were in common use back then. I still remember having to use a typewriter to fill in vehicle summary forms at the end of every month and no errors were allowed. Sometimes I typed four or five forms out as I hit an incorrect key. Later on electric typewriters made their appearance with their own innovations like golf balls that came on an IBM Selectric (see one of these in action at https://youtu.be/kLySMIzASNE) and which also had a "correcting key".
