Google releases Trusted Contacts, a location sharing app for personal safety and emergency assistance Yes you could do plain location sharing for ages on G+ to selected contacts (works across OSs as long as they have the G+ app) or also with Glympse, but this app has a few tweaks such as not sharing by default, and choosing to respond to a ping for location. It is more uniquely positioned for safety purposes. I'd hope too that: 1. The "send" side could be expanded more to send a ping if violent movement is detected by the phone, or the option of choosing a gesture or button as a shortcut for sending a panic signal 2. Or if you are entering a known dangerous area and want to actively transmit for a period (It does do this - but I'd like the option for it to send an active notification if I stop moving in this area or bump my phone hard) 3.
