Netflix is our biggest competitor: M-Net CEO

M-Net CEO: Netflix & Amazon Prime Video are our biggest competitors in South Africa M-Net CEO Yolisa Phahle has stated that Netflix and Amazon – through its Prime Video service – are its biggest competitors. CapeTalk’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Phahle on The Money Show as part of M-Net’s 30th anniversary celebrations, where she spoke about the challenges the broadcaster faces. “These are the guys, along with the Internet, that will really disrupt our industry.” “Of course we have competition from other channels, but it is completely new technologies that are going to be the real game changers.” Phahle said people are watching more entertainment than ever before, and there were many more ways for people to consume media than only through a TV. “Today you can watch the news on your phone, on your tablet, on your laptop, on your TV, so I think we are only at the beginning of the real competition.” “For the consumer, it’s great, because they have choice now,” said Phahle, adding that this meant pay-TV operators and entertainment companies have to work harder to win the “hearts and minds” of their audience. Yes and as broadband becomes more of a reality in SA, expect far more of this competition! It is also in the interests of M-Net's own subscribers, that it has serious competition as right now M-Net has become a virtual monopoly. If you are not a serious sports fan (because then you are locked into M-Net unfortunately for now) you should try out the free one month trial with Netflix - because you do have options now....
