How South Africans are fighting crime in their hoods - with an app Lots of technology is being used to fight crime and make residents feel safer in their communities. On the more expensive end of the scale you have the CCTV systems with number plate recognition and two-way radios. At the free end of the scale neighbours are coming together virtually in Facebook Community Pages and using apps like Zello to stay in contact. The police are often also involved now in these groups and apps. So it is worth finding out what your local neighbourhood watch is using, and if you don't yet have a Facebook Community Page set up, try starting one yourself. Pensioners or the elderly at home during the day become the eyes and ears of the community with no need to go outside. On the flip side , if they or someone else has an emergency, they are in close contact with other neighbours nearby. Not everyone wants to go to community meetings or patrol the streets at night, but you can at least get involved "virtually". You'd be surprised how much is going on in your community that you were not aware of. See http://ift.tt/1HQ2kCt
