Pick n Pay tests self-service till A picture of a self-service check-out machine at one of retailer Pick n Pay’s stores has caused a mix of both horror and glee, much of which was expressed on social media. But Pick n Pay’s group executive for strategy and corporate affairs, David North, said the machine was merely in test phase in one store in Cape Town. I remember visiting Tesco in London last year, and being a bit lost with the self-service tills at first. As South Africans we're just not sued to this, like when I had to pump my own petrol in Bath in England. Self-service tills would be quite a major leap forward for South Africa. There will be staff monitoring it, but not as many as we have currently for each till along with a separate bag packer. But I'm thinking specifically of busy retailers where there are queues and still there are 10 unoccupied tills, which could be put to better use as self-service tills. Whether we like it or not though.... progress does march forward. We no longer have someone walking in front of every motor car carrying a flag to warn people of the approaching iron horse....
